Royal Events

11 June - George starts a two week tour of North Africa meeting the victorious commanders, including General Eisenhower. 20 June - visits Malta.

11 November - Royal Assent given to a new Regency Bill which allowed Princess Elizabeth to be included among Counsellors of State; "in order that she should have every opportunity of gaining experience in the duties which would fall upon her in the event of her acceding to the Throne."

February - 5/- (series 8) booklet issued

August - 2/6 (series 7) booklet issued - continues to 1951

1943 - end of serial numbers and commercial advertising in booklets

Airmail -

300,000lbs of airmail carried on the Atlantic Ferry route during 1943.

8 January - civilian airmail between Canada and Great Britain suspended - mail service continues by sea routes. (see 23 July)

9 April - Extension of air letter service from GB to armed services. At first these air letters required a 6d stamp to be affixed.

18 June - First air letter with an impressed 6d stamp.

18 June - Flights begin from Kegalia in Ceylon, arriving in Perth the next day. Kegalia is connected to Karachi [10 July] to establish a new horseshoe route.

10 July - first Qantas flight on route to Karachi carrying mail going on to UK. Connecting at Karachi with BOAC services. Mail carried was mainly airgraphs and a few official documents until September 1944.

22 July - first Canadian government's air service (Trans-Canada Air Lines using an adapted Lancaster) arrives at Prestwick. Mainly to be used by Canadian armed forces and mail to/from the UK.

15 December - the Royal Canadian Airforce 168 squadron (soon to be called the 'Mailcan' squadron) start a mail service from Rockcliffe, Ontario to Prestwick using Fortress B-17s.


Lancasters were used by Trans-Canada Air Lines
? / 1943 - Great Western and Southern Air Lines use cachet shown (in violet) for Penzance - Scilly Isles service. This 'Airway Letter' service had been in operation for troops since October 1940 without cachets applied. Fees were 4d for up to 2 oz., 7d up to 4 oz., 11d up to 1lb. (Until 1947 when G.W. & S taken over by BEA).

Other -

18 June - the Parcels Section at Mount Pleasant Sorting Office in London was destroyed along with 77,000 parcels. Two members of staff were killed and 34 injured. The section was moved to the Agricultural Hall, Islington for about a year.

8 to 20 November - Czechoslovak Postal Exhibition held at Grosvenor Place, London. Labels issued.

1943 - 'Earl's Court Exhibition B.O. S.W.5. Single circle steel handstamp. Was this issued during war?
