9 January - George welcomed the chief delegates of the General Assembly of the United Nations in London on the eve of their first meeting.

11 June - Issue of 'Victory' set

Airmail -

1 January - British South American Airways Corporation first survey flight from Heathrow to Lisbon, Bathurst, Natal, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires, arriving 6 January. Donald Bennett piloted an Avro 691 Lancastrian, (G-AGWG - Star Light). Mail was carried, but the airmail service was not advertised and no special marks were applied. The postage rate was 2s6d per half ounce. The first regular flights began 23 March at a rate of 1s6d per half ounce, with postcards costing 9d. (BSAA merged with BOAC in 1949).

11 January - Scottish Airways Ltd carry out an emergency mail flight from Kirkwall to North Ronaldshay, Orkneys.

9 April - old Empire route, Australia to England route re-opens by B.O.A.C. and Qantas. Special covers issued.

27 June - first regular service from London to Santiago.

 < 1 July - BOAC commences direct flights from London via Shannon and Gander to New York. A Lockheed Constellation aircraft ('Bristol II', G-AHEJ) was piloted by Captain O.P.Jones on the first flight. (Picture of aircraft, not on first flight).

1 August - British European Airways established for domestic and European flights.

9 August - Panair do Brazil start service London to Rio de Janiero.

2 September - BSAA start twice monthly service : London, Azores, Bermuda, Jamaica, Caracas.

5 September - BSAA start direct Jamaica to London service, via Bermuda.

24 September - BSAA start to use Dakar instead of Bathurst on route to South America.

6 October - start of daily airmail service to Malta. Flight leaves Northolt at 11 a.m. to arrive in Malta at 10.15 p.m.

6 December - FAMA (Flota Aerea Mercante Argentina) start service : Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Dakar, Lisbon, Paris, London. (Proving flight was 15 September).

Other -

13 April - last day of use for Channel Islands occupation stamps.

14 to 17 May - 28th Philatelic Congress of Great Britain, Brighton. Special postmark issued, see below.

28 December to 4 January - British Philatelic Exhibition held at Imperial Institute, South Kensington. Label issued.

* 1 December to 19 January 1946 - postmark 'UNITED NATIONS - LONDON 1945' with globe, used in London Post Offices.

14 to 17 May - '28th Philatelic Congress of Great Britain Brighton'. Special design, steel handstamp.

   
* 20 May to 15 June - 'Don't Waste Bread Others Need It'. Block.
