1937 Coronation

    Page 2

Page 3          Page 4      Cylinder / Position index

The Coronation stamp has many varieties mainly due to the speed at which it was put into production and because of its deep colour which shows up minor imperfections. The hunt for these blemishes has been pursued by many - and criticized by many as the hunt for 'fly-specks', (I've always seen stamp collecting as a personal interest - so do what pleases you).

The first major study was carried out by L Birch in; ‘The Coronation Stamp - 1937’, published by the Midland Stamp Co., (no date) - the listing below is based on that book with further entries.

Additional notes

a. Left hand rays - (all nd cylinders were issued with either ray flaw or ray flaw corrected on row 19/1)
a1

QCom1a

Ray flaw. < is thickened and the space between partially filled with white. A light brown patch between V and <. Sometimes the bottom ^ is broken away from the lacing. The ray flaw is found on cyls 4nd, 6nd, 7nd, 8nd, 10nd, 12nd, 16nd, 17nd, 19nd and 24nd, row 19/1.

The amount of white filling the space varies - e.g. from cyl 10

QCom 1b

Ray flaw corrected. L Birch mentions the work of  W A Tester of Ramsgate and his study of this variety.

The ray flaw was corrected before issue on cyls 2nd, 3nd, 18nd, 20nd, 23nd, 27nd and 30nd. Most of the brown patch is still visible.

Cylinders 4nd, 7nd, 10nd, 16nd and 19nd were re-issued with the correction.

Cyl 2 V brown patch on right prong. < brown patch on upper prong which is slightly thicker than lower prong, (see example).

Cyl 3 Patches on prongs of V and <, top prong of < much thinner than lower prong.

Cyl 4 Distinctive < with badly shaped and inwardly curved upper prong. Two small brown patches between top and right prong and one small patch at mouth of right prong.

Cyl 7 No brown patch, upper prong of < thin and long, (see example).

Cyl 10 Heavy brown patch between prongs of <. Top prong very thin.

Cyl 16 Top prong of < cut away slightly at point and thick, (see example).

Cyl 18 Round brown patch between V and <. Also traces between prongs of <. Lower prong of < thinner with slight bend towards base, (see example).

Cyl 19 Very distinctive. Both prongs of < very thin and very wide.

Cyl 20 Similar to 18 but less brown patch and upper prong of < shows bend towards end.

Cyl 23 Brown patch cuts into V. Upper prong of < is thicker than lower and has slight bend at end, (see example).

Cyl 27 Practically no brown patch. Ends of prongs of < square and of equal thickness. End of top prong has decided bend.

Cyl 30 Brown patch gone. Lower prong of < very thin.
