Hutted Camp, Bentley
Farm, Old Church Hill, Langdon Hills, Essex [TQ 668 864 / 4 - see note below]
Brief mention in 'Thresholds of Peace'.
Information about the location of this camp from Bill Cox (webmaster:
Basildon History - www.basildon.com
) - "The grid reference refers to a former army camp which is now
the site of Bentley Farm. I believe it closed during the late 1960's or
early 1970's. Most buildings were removed although a few remained for many
years following closure.
The former P.O.W. camp (266) was in fact located
at the summit of Langdon Hills on a large flat piece of land adjacent to
Dry Street. There are no remains except one concrete floor on the side
closest to the
High Road, Langdon Hills. This is the second highest point in Essex
and there is a beacon, which is occasionally lit, on the now open land
which forms part of the Westley Heights country park.
...the postcode for the area is SS16 6HY... www.multimap.com ... gives a
grid reference of TQ679865...Google Maps is even better... if you enter
the postcode you will get the road network for the area. Switch to
street view and enable the view to go 'full screen'. You can then move
the 'street view' to the point where the High Road meets Dry Street.
Turn into Dry Street and you will see the field on the right. I was
amazed that I could actually 'zoom in' on the only remaining evidence of
the camps existence, the concrete floor, as mentioned in my first email.
In fact I got the floor to take up my full screen where you can still
see the remains of the wall sections."

Norduck Farm, Aston Abbots, Buckinghamshire
[SP 8393 2033 / 4]
1945 German POWs moved into Nissen huts formerly occupied
by Czech soldiers and a tented prisoner of war camp was created along the
drive to Norduck Farm. Over 250 prisoners held there.
18 February 1947 in the House of Commons,
Mr. Stokes M.P., "asked the Secretary of State for
War how many prisoners are detained at Camp No. 268, Aston Abbotts; how many
prisoners have been repatriated from that camp since the 1st October, 1946;
and how many of them are at present working in industrial plants in the
district."
Mr. Bellenger M.P. replied; "On 12th February there were 1,655 prisoners
of war in this Camp. 356 have been repatriated since 1st October, 1946. 797
are employed in industrial plants in the district." HC Deb
