Glandulas Camp, Newtown,
Montgomeryshire [listed, Wales]
9 July 1946, Mr. Jack Lawson (Secretary of State
for War) answered a question in the House of Commons about the category of
prisoners in this camp; "...On 15th June, 1946, this camp administered 853
German prisoners of war, of whom 527 were actually accommodated in the camp;
only one of them is graded as an anti-Nazi, and 25 are known to have Nazi
sympathies but are not 'activists'; a large number of these prisoners are
not yet classified. Except in the case of ardent Nazis of a type who might
cause trouble, it is not now the general practice to segregate prisoners of
war. Reasonable amenities have been provided at this camp for all the
prisoners." HC Deb 09 July 1946 vol 425 cc223-4 |

12 February 1946 - in the House of Commons Mr. Edelman asked the Secretary
of State for War whether he would consult with the Chancellor of the Duchy
of Lancaster in order to expedite the repatriation and release of anti-Nazi
German prisoners of war, formerly at Camp 7, Ascot, and then mainly at Camp
157, Bourton-on-Hill, "who gave useful political information and service
to the prisoners-of-war programme of the B.B.C. and who could play a
valuable part in the reconstruction of a democratic Germany."
Mr. Lawson replied that, "316 anti-Nazi prisoners of war from Camp 157,
who were formerly at Camp 7, Ascot, were repatriated on 7th February. A
further small number of prisoners of war who were at Camp 7 will be
concentrated for repatriation in the near future. Others who are at present
actively employed at this camp will be repatriated as soon as replacements
can be found." HC Deb 12 February 1946 vol 419 c52W

Llanover Park, Llanover,
Abergavenny, Monmouthshire - base camp [listed, Wales]
1944 the site used by US Troops training for D-Day, (they
were to land on Utah Beach). After D-Day the camp held German and Italian
prisoners from 1944 until 1946/7 - officers remaining transferred to Llanmartin Camp 184. Mentioned in 'Prisoners of England'.
20 December 1946, Mr. Richard
Stokes M.P. "asked the Secretary of State for War on whose instructions
the camp commandant at the prisoner-of-war camp Llanover Park, Abergavenny,
has decreed that no more parcels arriving in the camp addressed to prisoners
will be delivered; and if he will have this order immediately reversed."
Mr. Frederick Bellenger M.P. replied that; "The Commandant at the camp
in question, in refusing parcels addressed from this country to prisoners
453W of war, was acting correctly in accordance with existing instructions.
Following the relaxation of restrictions on contact with the public which I
announced recently, I have now decided that prisoners of war may receive
parcels from relatives and friends in the United Kingdom. Instructions are
also being issued that prisoners of war may write to, and receive letters
from, members of the British public." HC Deb 20

Weston Acres Camp,
Woodmansterne, Surrey TQ 265 585 or TQ 265 595 / 5]
Information received from John Havers - "Having been
on the staff of 239 (G) POW Camp at Western Acres, Woodmansterne, Surrey
from May 1946 to March 1948 - Western Acres was purely the HQ in a very
large house plus a bungalow (our Sgts Mess) and a few Nissan huts. It
comprised of a small number of POWs (cooks, drivers, accounts clerks, etc)
plus British staff, but the majority were housed in what were called hostels
situated throughout Surrey and Middlesex. These were tented, later hutted
camps with up to 350 POWs, but some considerably smaller. Work gangs went
out each day, mostly to building sites."
Further details about Camp 239
supplied by John Havers.
